Effects of Clonal Integration on Foraging Behavior of Three Clonal Plants in Heterogeneous Soil Environments

چکیده
Environments are ubiquitously heterogeneous in nature, and clonal plants commonly benefit from both integration foraging responses environments. While many studies have examined separately, few tested the effect of on response to environmental heterogeneity. We grew offspring ramets each three (Hydrocotyle vulgaris, Duchesnea indica, Glechoma longituba) homogeneous heterogenous soil environments severed their stem connection a mother ramet (to prevent ramet) or kept it intact allow integration). Without ramet, heterogeneity had no biomass number for any species. With integration, also D. indica G. longituba, but significantly decreased marginally H. vulgaris. did not demonstrate either shoot root terms total, environment vulgaris responses, longituba demonstrated those when they environment. conclude that can alter plants, this is species-specific. Our results suggest may necessarily growth plants.

Ecological Consequences of Clonal Integration in Plants
Clonal plants are widespread throughout the plant kingdom and dominate in diverse habitats. Spatiotemporal heterogeneity of environment is pervasive at multiple scales, even at scales relevant to individual plants. Clonal integration refers to resource translocation and information communication among the ramets of clonal plants. Due to clonal integration, clonal plant species possess a series ...
متن کاملPhylogenetic Meta-Analysis of the Functional Traits of Clonal Plants Foraging in Changing Environments
Foraging behavior, one of the adaptive strategies of clonal plants, has stimulated a tremendous amount of research. However, it is a matter of debate whether there is any general pattern in the foraging traits (functional traits related to foraging behavior) of clonal plants in response to diverse environments. We collected data from 97 published papers concerning the relationships between fora...
متن کاملRoot Foraging Increases Performance of the Clonal Plant Potentilla reptans in Heterogeneous Nutrient Environments
BACKGROUND Plastic root-foraging responses have been widely recognized as an important strategy for plants to explore heterogeneously distributed resources. However, the benefits and costs of root foraging have received little attention. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS In a greenhouse experiment, we grew pairs of connected ramets of 22 genotypes of the stoloniferous plant Potentilla reptans in...
متن کاملHow Past and Present Influence the Foraging of Clonal Plants?
Clonal plants spreading horizontally and forming a network structure of ramets exhibit complex growth patterns to maximize resource uptake from the environment. They respond to spatial heterogeneity by changing their internode length or branching frequency. Ramets definitively root in the soil but stay interconnected for a varying period of time thus allowing an exchange of spatial and temporal...
متن کاملEffects of clonal integration on the invasive clonal plant Alternanthera philoxeroides under heterogeneous and homogeneous water availability
Many notorious invasive plants are clonal, living in heterogeneous or homogeneous habitats. To understand how clonal integration affects the performance of these plants in different habitat conditions, an 8-week greenhouse experiment was conducted: ramet pairs of A. philoxeroides were grown in two habitats, either heterogeneous or homogeneous in water availability, with the stolon connections e...
